Presentations: 2016 Miami Conference Presentations

An Introduction To Peroxide Formers – Nikki Young
Many chemicals used in laboratories by researchers can prove to be increasingly hazardous during storage.  As some chemicals age, they can form explosive peroxides and become shock sensitive.  The presentation will discuss the common types of peroxide forming chemicals.  The threats to human health and safety will be examined along with proper management systems.  The current guidance and regulations from NFPA and OSHA will be provided.  The presentation will also discuss what should be done if the various chemicals form explosive peroxides.

Shipping Dangerous Goods at the University of Virginia – Even More Fun Than It Sounds! – Adam Peters
In 2008 the US Department of Transportation levied a $30,000 fine against the University of Virginia after a faculty member shipped a package containing dry ice improperly. Following this event, Adam Peters was tasked with developing a training program for shipping dry ice and a program to handle the shipping of other hazardous materials for students, faculty, and staff. From training to acquisition of packaging to surprise visits from the FAA, the development, implementation, and evolution of these programs will be discussed.

Development and Testing of a Survey to Measure Training Effects on the Culture of Safety – Eric Jorgensen
Despite a plethora of training programs and methods being developed to improve safety, no general instrument exists capable of assessing the quality or effectiveness of these programs. This presentation describes the steps that were taken in the defining of the construct Research Laboratory Culture of Safety (RLCS) and the subsequent creation of a survey capable of quantifying the construct. Hundreds of questions were compiled from numerous sources into a comprehensive pool. This pool of questions was evaluated by a panel of experts from universities across the United States. One hundred questions were selected by the experts and compiled into a pilot survey given to 266 PIs and Graduate students at three different universities. The results of the pilot study were used to refine the survey to the final 36 question instrument (Research Laboratory Culture of Safety Survey – RLCSS).

Avoid Violations and Fines! My Top 5 Environmental Compliance Issues – Sharon Sandler
The facilities that make up higher education institutions are subject to a wide-range of environmental considerations – air permitting and compliance, fuel storage, hazardous waste disposal, and more. It is critical to be aware of these requirements in advance, instead of playing catch-up after a deadline has passed or equipment has been installed without proper permits. This session will review typical environmental roles and responsibilities, my top five common environmental compliance issues, and recommended Best Management Practices to maximize efforts to attain and sustain compliance. A high-level overview of the regulations associated with these five highlighted issues will be discussed, as well as common pitfalls to avoid. The presentation will focus on real-world examples based upon consulting experience.
